Knowing how to recognize the fundamental importance of bone marrow functions and knowing how to connect certain blood diseases to its malfunction

Description
General aims The purpose of the teaching unit is to bring students closer to the world of research and to stimulate critical and aware attitudes in them. The entire unit wants to provide an overview of stem cells and their use in the therapeutic field. This resource addresses, in particular, the study of the bone marrow and highlights its importance for hematopoiesis. Linguistic aims • Improving language skills in L2 • Enriching scientific vocabulary • Knowing how to move from one linguistic register to another • Producing clear and coherent texts in L2 • Summarizing written texts Subject specific aims This resource aims to make student understand: • the structure of the bone marrow; • the structural and functional difference between red and yellow marrow; • the meaning of hematopoiesis; • the differences between myeloid stem cells and lymphoid stem cells; • how the onset of some blood diseases, for example leukemia, are due to the malfunction of this organ Target group age 14-15 Level of competence in English (CEFR) B1 Time required to use the resource with the students 3h 2h resource analysis 1h comparison and discussion How to use it The teacher briefly describes the topic highlighting the importance of the bone marrow for the production of blood cells and for immunopoiesis. To facilitate understanding of the text the passage is divided into short paragraphs that students must summarize and schematize. Various exercises are then proposed which can be questionnaires with true / false answer, multiple choice, open-ended questions, answer questions, complete sentences, associate terms, keywords, use of certain words to compose sentences. The class is then divided into small groups and each one is assigned a topic of the resource that must be studied in depth with personal research that can also include videos or animations of the topic, this to enhance listening skills. The work carried out will then be included in the final one which will concern the entire learning unit. It can be produced in Power Point, through video, audio interviews, animations, in this way digital skills are further favored. The work will be presented to different classes Possible difficulties for the students Some difficulties can be given by the classification and functions of the various blood cells
