Description
General aims: Student will have basic knowledge about percentages and will be able to compare, convert between and order fractions, decimals, and percents. What is more students will use area and linear models of fractions, decimals, and percents to understand equivalence. One will know basic vocabulary in English connected with percentages. Student will develop positive learning habits such as organisational and problem-solving skills. Linguistic aims: - to read and listen English with ease - to understand content - to communicate experiences - to learn new vocabulary - to master tools for gathering information - to express understanding and experiences - to enable students to understand topic correctly - to develop academic language - to translate words connected with percentages in English into the mother tongue using one’s own words. Subject specific aims: - student compares fractions, decimals, and percents - student orders fractions, decimals, and percents - students convert between fractions, decimals, and percents - student gains confidence in their math skills - student is better prepared for standardized testing. Target group age: Students from primary school (12-13 years old), before using the resource they need to know: - how to do basic operation with decimals, - how to convert fraction into decimal, - the definition of percent, - express a percent as a decimal, - express a decimal as a percent. What is more, this video can be used by anyone who wants to do mathematical operations with percents, also by grade teachers who wants to teach percentage using English. Level of competence in English (CEFR) B1/B1+ Time required to use the resource with the students: The teacher can use the resource for two lessons. Students need 15minutes before the lesson, and 20 minutes for homework. Exact timings will depend on the needs of the class. How to use it Before using the video during one’s classes, the students should be able to do basic operation with fractions, decimals and percentages. The teacher asks students to do worksheet “Fractions, Decimals, and Percents” as a homework a few days before the formative assessment lesson. Teacher collects students’ responses to the task and makes some notes on what their work reveals about their current levels of understanding. Then, teacher helps students to make further progress by summarizing their difficulties as a series of questions written on the board. Students to work in groups of two or three. Teacher gives each group cut-up copies of Card Set A: “Decimals and Percents” and some plainpaper and asks them to fill in the blanks on the cards. During students’ work the teacher should use slides which are attached to the resource. They help teacher to conduct classes and students to understand what they need to do. When most groups have reached a consensus about the cards, teacher gives out Card Set B: “Areas” and instructions. As groups continue to work, teacher gives out Card Set C: Fractionsand Card Set D: Scales. While students are working teacher notes different student approaches to the task and supports student problem solving. Once students have ordered all 4 sets of cards, teacher gives them a piece of poster paper and a glue stick and ask them to glue their cards down in the agreed order. Teacher conducts a whole-class discussion about what has been learned and explores the different orders in which the cards have been placed. Teacher discusses with students their answers and approaches to the tasks. Some questions teachers gives this as homework. Possible difficulties for the students Students who have poor knowledge of English can have problems with understanding the content. Students who has problems doing basic operations with decimals can face difficulties in solving math problems with percentages which are introduced in the plan lesson which is recommended. The resource provides interesting lesson plan for teachers with teacher’s guide, student materials and projector resources , it can be used by teachers as a model to help them teach their own students to compare, convert between and order fractions, decimals, and percents. The strength of the resource is a rich content, worksheets, clarity of explanation, and a detailed explanation how to conduct classes. It relates to all the Standards for Mathematical Practicein the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. What is more, the academic language helps to develop academic vocabulary. In my opinion this lesson plan is scientifically reliable (the materials were designed and developed by theShell CenterTeamat the Centerfor Research in Mathematical EducationUniversity of Nottingham, England) and can be recommended to students and teachers. It is intuitive and usable. A layout is focused on ease of use. Consistent design allows the user to focus on the message. The resource could be more visually appealing to students and provide a wider range of different types of exercises.
