Description
General aims Students will be able to define and explain the concept. They will acquire the basic English vocabulary connected with the topic (Plastic- Living a zero waste life). The lesson focuses on the key words of the topic, gives students opportunities to concentrate on them and practice them through listening, speaking and writing activities (integrated activities). Linguistic aims Students will be able to: -listen to English audio texts with ease -comprehend the topic correctly translate words connected with the topic (Plastic- Living a zero waste life) from English into their mother tongue. Subject specific aims Students will be able to: -define the phenomenon -support their opinion Target groups age: Students from high school 16+ years old. Level of competence in English (CEFR) B2 Time required to use the resource with the students: 1 or 2 hours How to use it A.The teacher tells students the topic of the lesson The teacher presents the topic and asks students to watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF72px2R3Hg. Whilst watching, students take notes on the following key topics: What is zero waste? How did Lauren start quitting using plastic? Who inspired her? What steps she took to quit plastic? What are the benefits of quitting plastic? What tips she gives people to quit plastic? Teacher gives students the key topics in advance so they know what to look for when watching the video. A writing framework can be provided to facilitate the note taking activity and scaffold the activity. Students can use online dictionaries to deepen their understanding. Students swap their writing with a colleague and peer assess the work to deepen their understanding. Debate: What tips would you use from Lauren’s speech? One tip is learning how to make things yourself. What things would you make yourself and how? Would you follow Lauren’s example? Why? Why not? Possible difficulties for the students Students who have poor knowledge of English can have problems with understanding the content.
