Transferable/Scientific Skills Developed
• To explain the inner structure of the Earth by means of some chemical basis • To link the properties of semiconductors to their position in the periodic table. • Appreciate that silicon, one of the important elements used in solar cells, is one of the most abundant elements in the earth crust.

Description
General aims o To make student aware that the periodic table is a chemical picture of the Universe, and that the element are letters of a chemical alphabet to construct every kind of animate or inanimate things in the universe. o To improve the comprehension of the students that the semiconductors are a class of compounds which have a lot of interesting properties. o To explain the great advantages in the application of semiconductors as principle elements used to “catch solar energy” in solar cells. o To explain the huge importance of a responsible use of the Earth resources. Linguistic aims o To expand their vocabulary in the field related to earth science and ecological problems. o To practice the impersonal language to speculate about scientific topics. o To improve their listening skills. o To increase their expertise to get useful information from a web site or a video. Subject specific aims o Earth science: to know the main features of the inside of the Earth and the relationship with the periodic table. o to explain the relative abundance of the elements in the Earth crust and the relationship with their use. o Chemistry: the teach the most important chemical features of the element in the periodic table related to the properties of semiconductors. Target group age: 15-16 Level of competence in English. (CEFR) B1 Time required to use the resource with the students. 4 hours How to use it o Watching the videos during the explanation of the periodic table, and promoting a peer assisted learning. o To use the “new periodic table” to explain the inner structure of the Earth. o To use the “new periodic table” to improve a discussion about the link between quantity and need of some element in the Earth crust. o Trough the cooperative learning, to lead a discussion, between small groups of students, focused on the wrongful use of natural resources and the link with their different abundance into the Earth. Possible difficulties for the students. o To find a correlation between a lot of different things and a relative small number of element. o To understand the link between chemical structure and the properties of the semiconductors. o To link an element on the periodic table to a mineral, and its specific application related to its chemical proprieties. o To understand the strict connection between their daily habits and the right and conscious use of the elements of the periodic table.
