Description
General aims Students will be able to explain the phenomenon. They will acquire the basic English vocabulary connected with the topic (photosynthesis). Students will develop positive learning habits such as organisational, time management and problem-solving skills. Linguistic aims Students will be able to: - read English texts with ease - reflect on their reading experience and share it with their peers - get the main ideas from a text - comprehend the topic correctly - translate words connected with the topic (greenhouse effect) from English into their mother tongue. Subject specific aims Students will be able to: - present and explain the phenomenon Target groups age: Students from high school 16-18+ years old. What is more, this web site can be used by anyone who wants to do extend knowledge about the greenhouse effect. Level of competence in English (CEFR) B1+/B2 Time required to use the resource with the students: The teacher has to consider that the experiment unfolds over some weeks; students have to observe the plants over a period of time. How to use it Students are invited to do an experiment which enables them to explore factors that affect photosynthesis. They will measure how other factors can affect photosynthesis. Students are provided with a handout on the procedure for measuring the rate of photosynthesis and on the steps they have to follow in the experiment. The handout contains introductory information and questions teachers can ask before the experiment. Students complete a CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) for their observations showing the relationship between sodium bicarbonate and rate of photosynthesis. Lab report guidelines are included if they want to assign a lab report, but it is not necessary for the activity. • Possible difficulties for the students Students who have poor knowledge of English can have problems with understanding the content.
