Subject specific aims:
- to explain what the force of gravity is,
- to explain why bodies are weightless in space,
- to learn to use Newton’s law of gravitation to calculate the gravitational force the two objects exert on each other.
Target group age: 16 – 18 years old secondary school students.
Level of competence in English is (CEFR) B1/B1+.
Time required to use the source with students: 45 minutes.
How to use it
Teacher demonstrates the video and stops it at certain points to make sure, that students understand the topic and can answer the questions related to it. Teacher explains the Newton‘s Law of Universal Gravitation and writes the equation on the board (force is equal to big G times the mass of the two objects divided by the square of the distance between the two).
Students continue watching the video and learn to solve the equasions.
After watching the video students should be able to solve the equasions individually.
Key vocabulary will be introduced (gravity, force of gravity, mass, matter, force of attraction, attractive force, gravitational pull, orbit, equasion). Students will be practicing key vocabulary commenting the animation, answering the questions. Working individually students will improve equasion solving skills.
Possible difficulties for students. Students who have poor knowledge of English may have difficulties answering the question.
