Students will develop collaborative learning, self–directed learning, peer assisted learning skills.
The teaching resource will help students to revise the laws of light reflection and refraction. Students will also learn that light only travels in straight lines if the light is travelling in the same substance and it bends when it is travelling in different substances.
After getting acquainted with Isaac Newton’s light-scattering experiment and the transparent body, students will be asked a question: How is a triangular prism related to the topic of the lesson? Using virtual demonstrations, students will be able to distinguish types of lenses and explain key concepts that describe lenses.
The teaching resource helps to better understand the theoretical material before doing the laboratory experiment. Students will perform virtual experiments working in groups of four. Students will be able to answer the questions: What is a lens? What are the different types of lenses? What properties describe lenses? How does the image change when position of the lens and the object changes?
Each group has to choose only one of the four links (4, 5, 6, 7) to answer the question given and explain why that particular link helped them to answer the question.
The teaching material help students visually understand light reflection and refraction. Having examined a triangular prism, students will be able to explain how it is similar to a lens.
Students will practice key vocabulary (focal point of the lens, front and rear optical points, optical axis, minor optical axis, focal plane, a principal plane) talking about lenses, asking and answering the questions. Students will expand their active vocabulary, improve speaking skills and will be able to speak about topic with more confidence. The teaching resources could be used with 14 – 18 years old students whose level of competence in English (CEFR) is B1 and higher.
Strength: The information is presented in an attractive way. The teaching resource is easy to use and understand. It encourages students to actively participate in the lesson and develop their communicative skills. The source is reliable and it is a perfect additional material teaching about lenses. The content prepared professionally. Weakness: Students whose level of English is poor may have difficulties understanding the content, especially applying the formulas. Pedagogical value: the teaching material can improve student’s collaborative learning and peer assisted learning skills.
